Big John’s
Big John’s Tavern stands as Charleston’s oldest bar, a Market Street legend founded in 1955 by John “Big John” Cannady—the celebrated New York Giants linebacker who gave the city its most storied dive. Famous for its dark wood-paneled walls, Citadel cadet name tags, and a ceiling once adorned with bras, Big John’s was a sanctuary for locals and students seeking respite from the city’s trendy, tourist-driven scene. In addition to its rowdy charm, the tavern is woven into local lore thanks to tales about its founder, including one infamous night when he reportedly chased down and subdued a robber after being shot.
After a fire closed its doors in 2015, the bar was restored and reopened in 2021 by a team of Citadel graduates, who refreshed the space with bright mahogany touches and original details while making sure the spirit of “come as a stranger, leave as a friend” remained central. Today, Big John’s serves up inventive cocktails (like their smoked old fashioned), smash burgers, signature clothesline bacon, and an updated local beer list in a setting that respectfully blends old-school grit with new gastropub flair. Locals and visitors alike are still invited to experience the “hidden gem” atmosphere and the subtle whispers of Charleston’s past—one drink at a time. Located at 251 E.
