Poogan’s Porch
Poogan’s Porch is a Southern restaurant located in Charleston’s historic district. The establishment occupies a restored Victorian home built in 1888 (or 1891, sources vary slightly) that was originally a spacious private residence before being converted into a restaurant in 1976. The restaurant is named after Poogan, a friendly neighborhood Wheaten Terrier who became a beloved fixture and mascot during the restaurant’s early years, often greeting guests from the porch. Poogan passed away in 1979 and was buried on the property, and his spirit is said to still haunt the restaurant.
Known for authentic Lowcountry and Southern cuisine, Poogan’s Porch serves classic dishes such as shrimp and grits, buttermilk fried chicken, and pimento cheese fritters. The interior retains historic features creating an atmosphere of warm hospitality and Southern grace. The restaurant is a longtime favorite among locals, tourists, and celebrities, recognized for its culinary excellence and its blend of history and charm. Beyond dining, the restaurant is noted for its unique historic ambiance and reputed ghostly encounters that contribute to its distinctive character in Charleston’s vibrant food scene.
